Works by one of Poland's best painters, Pawel Susid, will be exhibited at the Potocka Gallery from 30th October until 17th December 2009.A characteristic feature of Pawel Susid's canvases is a composition of geometric forms in pure intense colours with stencil inscriptions or messages in dark paint.

International Women's Movements

Certain women's movements I consider as universal.

Regarding the others, we still can't reach an agreement.

This is similar to other concepts.

I still don't know, although I have been thinking about it a long time.

Paweł Susid

Paintings directly, or indirectly, referring to women's issues are on display at this exhibition. The phrases painted on these pictures refer to the stereotypical presentations which occur in worldwide mass media. The artist has singled out popular motifs about women. These issues are arresting, widely discussed, interesting and of the moment. Many of the slogans seem to be perverse or even anti-feminist: - 'Oh thank you, I spent the summer with old women in the city'.

The painted phrases often resemble a quotation: 'Nothing went alright unless I took the yellow pill'. Behind the seeming simplicity of the text, an unspoken implied message is concealed. Every single word has been well thought out in terms of its weight and strength to give a relevant if ambiguous message. These phrases, which often do not permit a precise interpretation, leave the viewer with a fleeting and contemplative emotion as the artist intended. Each message is like a snowball which, rolled down a slope, gathers layers of meanings, associations and motives. To each one of us these layers are different and depend upon our personal opinions and experiences. Each of Susid's phrases is open to the viewer's own interpretation. 'Looking deep into the policewoman's eyes I ask "Haven't you found any other way of earning your living?" ' . Introducing new themes, the artist gives us freedom to envisage possible developments and meanings.
